As boats become more and more technically advanced, integrated and “connected”, data security is becoming an important issue. Recent hacks in the automotive industry have revealed security vulnerabilities in some CAN-based systems.

The NMEA organization has responded to this threat by establishing a cybersecurity working group to identify and mitigate the risks of attacks on maritime transport.

NET Protect is the world's first NMEA 2000 security system focused on NMEA 2000 and developed as part of this NMEA initiative.

NET Protect is a self-contained, bus-powered black box that receives and analyzes all NMEA 2000 network data. It has three main functions:

Test and validate the NMEA 2000 network during installation
Tools for NMEA 2000 configuration and network monitoring/analysis
Continuous 24/7 monitoring and protection throughout the life of the vessel

Installation tests and CANSHOT™

Certified Devices - This test queries all devices on the network and checks whether they are listed in the NMEA 2000 Certified Product database. Uncertified devices are identified because they represent a possible cause of network failures and interoperability issues. The identified devices can still be used on the network, but it is recommended to take extra care to ensure that they function correctly and do not cause network problems.

Name Check - This test scans the NMEA (64-bit binary number) name of every device on the network and reports any non-standard or incorrect NMEA names that could indicate a malicious device. All reported devices should be immediately investigated and removed from the network.

Gateway Validation - Gateways are a potential vulnerability in a NMEA 2000 network and can allow hackers to inject malicious data or control a network. Because of this, NET Protect can identify and validate any NMEA 2000 gateway in the system.

Duplicate Device Instances - Multiple devices on the network that use the same class and feature codes and the same device instance can cause problems identifying the data source and can be used to inject spoofed data into the network. This test identifies all duplicates and the instance configuration tool can be used to assign a unique device instance to a duplicate device.

Duplicate PGNs - Multiple devices outputting duplicate PGNs can cause data source selection issues and cause some devices to display incorrect or no data. This test identifies duplicate PGNs and the command address change tool can be used to change a device's CAN address and reduce or increase its priority.

Data Sources - This test can be used in conjunction with the other network topography tests to determine which devices are automatically selected as the primary data source for GNSS, depth, wind, boat speed and heading. Based on the PGNs they issue and their CAN address, NET Protect identifies the devices that are the primary data sources, and the command address change tool can be used to change which device is the primary data source.

Devices that output “No Data” – This test checks all devices that output navigation PGNs with “No Data” in the key field, i.e. H. which transmit a depth PGN with the depth field “No data”. If a higher priority device says “No Data”, it may result in the data of the device you want to use not being displayed.

Product Firmware Audit - This test queries each device on the network and creates a simple list of the firmware version specified in each device's product information PGN. This is useful for checking whether all devices on the network are up to date or whether a firmware update has occurred since the current CANshot™ was taken and caused problems.

Total LEN - This test queries the LEN value of all devices on the network and calculates the total LEN value for the network. This can be useful to ensure that the network is properly designed and constructed and does not suffer from brownouts or data corruption.

Once the installation tests are complete and the installer is satisfied with the network performance, the CANshot option is executed. This takes a “snapshot” of the network and stores the results internally. This report can also be saved and printed.

NET Protect then enters 24/7 monitoring mode, alerting audibly and storing alerts in an event log for analysis. When connected to a Digital Yacht 4G Xtream or 5G Xtream system, optional SMS alerts can be enabled for remote monitoring.

A new device, a change to an existing device, or strange network behavior causes NET Protect to take action

Depending on the threat level, this could be a pop-up alert, the transmission of a NMEA 2000 Alert PGN, the internal buzzer sounding, or even an SMS message to a specific mobile phone via our 4G Xtream/5G Xtream systems.

The last 16 events are stored in a network event log.

Configuration

The NMEA 2000 security system NET Protect also provides the following configuration and data analysis tools:

Configuration Info Programming - Allows you to change the configuration information text in all devices. Not all devices support this feature, but it is now required in the NET specification and is therefore becoming increasingly important.

Instance Configuration - Changes the device instance of an N2K device. Not all devices support this, but most engine gateways and devices that use instances do.

Commanded Address Change – Allows you to change the address of a device; all devices should support this to meet certification standards

Network Device List – Shows a list of devices on the network with address, manufacturer name, CAN name, class and function

PGN List - Shows timestamped PGN number and source, description with drill-down data

Data Logging – Creating and storing a complete data log of raw binary data
